Managing Faults Actively

Only recently we wrote that we care about “making measurable what cannot be measured”. And now it has already become concrete — and serious.

A central grid-connection sensor failed. The very sensor whose values our feed-in management bases its decisions on. The tricky part: a failed sensor simply stays silent. And a system that looks only at values would have kept steering. Drifting further from reality with every minute. Until the wrong control action had turned into a real plant risk.

But that’s not what happened.

enmacs:FLEX looked not only at the value, but also at its ‘silence’. That made it possible to shut down the dependent systems in a controlled way and avoid potential consequential damage. Fully automated, without a human happening to stumble across it in a dashboard.

This is exactly what we mean by managing faults actively. Not: preventing faults — no one can do that. But: detecting them, responding safely, reporting. Any EMS can steer as long as all the data is flowing. The difference shows in the moment a data source drops out — and sooner or later, it always does.
